Sunday Preview for April 22, 2018 – Learning Discernment

Numerous theories surround the person Scripture refers to as “the antichrist.” While they differ widely, many of them hold this basic  assumption: the antichrist will be somebody famous.

Search online for pictures of the antichrist and you will find a gallery of powerful and charismatic people: world leaders like Donald Trump, Barack Obama, and Vladimir Putin; tech giants like Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Mark Zuckerberg; religious leaders like Pope Francis and Billy Graham.  It seems that, if you want to spot the antichrist, you just need to check and see who’s on the cover of Time.

If only it were so easy!

In reality, the spirit that opposes Jesus isn’t flashy, isn’t owned solely by the rich and powerful, and isn’t confined to some time in the far-off future.  It’s close at hand, an obstacle to our own faith and mission, but one that we do not need to fear.

In this Sunday’s passage, 1 John 2:18-27, the apostle tells us how to identify and overcome this spirit.  Come worship and learn together!
